WHY WE LOVE THIS COFFEE // Several of the coffees we purchase are based on their flavor profiles as well as the stories behind them. This is one of them.
This 4th Place Finisher of the annual Forca Café Championship yeilded only 22 bags of coffee from their harvest and we were lucky enough to have secured two of them! This competition is a major aid for farmers of Brazil and the information below details how.In early 2014, InterAmerican Coffee began considering how they might assist Brazil’s smallholder producers in improving their agronomy practices, cup quality and profitability. The result was the Forca Café Championship — a contest to determine and celebrate the best coffees from Minas Gerais. Farmers were paired with an online auction accessible to those around the world. An international group of NKG importers, exporters and customers convened on Fazenda da Lagoa to cup the nearly 180 samples in the respective categories of Semi-Washed Coffees and Natural Coffees. Additionally, to benefit and raise up the coffee community of San Antônio do Amparo, the contest was linked to Casa da Criança, a community center that offers crucial youth services and adult classes. Specifically, winners of auction coffees have the option to add a ten-cents-per-pound premium to the sale price, all of which benefits the center and improves the lives of these farmers.
