WHY WE LOVE THIS COFFEE // Coffees from Burundi will always have a place at Aero. The owner of JNP Coffee, Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian , has become one of the most influential woman in coffee. I met Jeanine at a cupping and her vibrant personality drew me in. Upon learning of the guidance and infrastructure she offers the farmers of Burundi, I knew I had to help.As a child growing up in Burundi, Jeanine recalls her mother's story. Her family cultivated coffee in Ngozi Province as a means to pay for school fees. Years later, Jeanine earned an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and has since enjoyed a 20-plus-year international business career that has led her back to Burundi and back to coffee. She saw the opportunity to promote unknown Burundi coffees and to advocate for their farmers, her people. In 2012, Jeanine founded JNP Coffee, who are known for their award-winning specialty coffees. JNP Coffee encourages transformational change for local coffee farmers by promoting gender equality, supporting financial literacy education and developing leadership skills. These efforts empower the farmers and their families to build resilience and expand their coffee production capacity. Jeanine is the only woman majority shareholder of a large Burundian coffee conglomerate – a force and model for what a Burundian woman can achieve in her country. As a licensed Q grader, she continues to strengthen the global specialty coffee industry.
